• Question: when did u think that you wanted to be a scientist

      It took me a long time to decide to be a scientist. I only made the decision to do what I do now when I was 21, so don’t worry if you’re not sure what you want to be yet!

      Only when I started studying and realised I was interested in psychology. Before then I’d always thought of myself as arty or sporty, more creative than scientific.

      Probably in my second undergraduate year at uni when I came across social psychology (which is an area of psychology that focuses on how our behaviour is influenced by the presence of others). I was really fascinated by social psychological theories about aggression, prosocial behaviour, impression formation, social influence etc. I wanted to know more about human interaction and I had lots of questions. So when I couldn’t find the answers I was looking for in books and journal articles, I realised I had to go out into the field and discover the answers for myself by conducting research – that’s when I decided to become a scientist.
