I enjoy helping people and I’m curious – I find those are good ingredients for a psychologist!

I found that it suited my personality, part science, part people based, and it would allow me to work in sport if I wanted to.

I chose to become a psychologist while I was in high school because I thought (based on the movies I’d seen) it mainly meant talking to people about their problems and helping them find solutions
that worked for them (what a counselling psychologist does). After I started studied psychology at university, I quickly discovered that there are many other ‘flavours’ of psychology and I could be working, say, with children and parents (educational psychologist) or with athletes (sport psychologists). In my second undergraduate year I had a module on social psychology (that focuses on group dynamics and on how our actions influence and are influenced by others around us) and I was really fascinated by this domain which covers topics such as aggression, prosocial behaviour, first impressions, stereotypes and prejudice, conformity, obedience, persuasion and so many others. I then decided I wanted to be a social psychologist, which I went on to do.

I became a psychologist because I wanted to learn more about why people act in the way that they do. The reason I focussed on teenage risk taking in particular was because I had worked with all kinds of fantastic young people who were very inspiring. On the other hand, I had also worked with some young people who had made poorer choices, which had led to them being involved in the criminal justice system. I wanted to find out why some young people were more likely to go down this negative path and how we could help to steer them in the right direction.
