Currently due to age/injury I don’t play sport, apart from cycling, but I use certain techniques such as goal setting to help with general fitness/physio which ultimately will enable me to cycle without causing more back pain. Psychologists can help sports people with visualisation, motivation, goal setting, team cohesiveness. The list is pretty long! My masters thesis looked at REBT (a type of cognitive therapy) and links to performance in tennis. My PhD, while looking at social psychology in transport, is based on social identity theory. This is applied in sport to help athletes with issues when they’re injured, leaving sport and with team cohesiveness and leadership.
